How to do Cross Culture Negotiations

Before any professional international or domestic negotiations, we always do some strategic planning or homework about tomorrow’s face off. While planning we always do some research & think about some factors like time, setting arrangements, situation, stakes of opposite parties, history of the parties, individual preferences, mood and nations of all the chaired persons.

In an unidentified article, a Japanese journalist describes that “U.S negotiators are stubborn to agree”.

In this section, I’ve comprehended top countries negotiation approaches in terms of behaviour pattern, tactical style and cultural perspective.

These could help negotiators and mediators prepare negotiations strategy for possible pitfalls to occur due to cross-cultural factors.

Kindly Note: Below approaches are only guidelines. It won't apply in every circumstance of negotiations.

The U.S. Approaches Negotiation

  • U.S. negotiators are autonomous, independent, self-reliant and tend to think individually. They love to work singly rather than as a segment of a crew. They focus on one problem at a time
  • U.S negotiators have a very much competitive approach in negotiations. If negotiation goes in a fall-back position then, negotiators come up with unrealistic offers and try to make a win-win situation.
  • U.S negotiators are very much energetic, confident, and enjoy debating their positions.

African Approaches to Negotiation

African follow ancestors formal laws, regulations & give more emphasis on hierarchies. While cross-cultural negotiation both parties admire the laws & regulations made by their ancestors. The aim of  this is to get a positive outcome without any distress or hurt

Japanese Styles of Negotiation

Japanese negotiators are focus, interdependent and have a hierarchical orientation.

Japanese negotiators are known for their courtesy and try to establish connections before the negotiation begins. Japanese negotiators tend to put less emphasis on the literal meanings of words used in negotiation.

European Styles of Negotiation

European styles of negotiation vary according to territory, community, language is spoken and many other contextual factors.

One group study found the French negotiators are very aggressive to achieve their goals. German and British negotiators were evaluated as moderately aggressive in the same study.

Latin American Styles of Negotiation

Latin American negotiators believe in systematic works & believe in associations.

In Central America, people respond to conflict very holistically rather than a linear, analytical one.

When Central American negotiators needed help while negotiations, they tend to look inside partials rather than outsider neutrals,

They referred to the concept of confianza. Confianza means "trustworthiness," that "they know us" and "we know them" and they will "keep our confidences."

The Evolution of Negotiation

The above approaches of negotiation across national cultures are changing constantly. International business culture tends to privilege Western approaches to negotiation, centred on problem-solving and linear communication, as do many settings. As Western norms are balanced with Eastern and Southern values, and local traditions are balanced with regional and national approaches, negotiation practices continue their global evolution.

Leadership Tips from Indian Treatise: Arthashastra

We all are very much familiar with the history of Chandragupta & his mentor Kautilya Chanakya. With the reference to this, we also aware with one of the oldest treatises is ARTHASHASTRA. This book was written by Vishnugupta Chanakya in 350BC-275BC.

This Indian treatise related to politics, economics, military strategy, the function of the state, and social organization. This book was very much helpful for the kings in ruling & controlling the kingdom. In today's time, it is very much helpful for entrepreneurs & corporate leaders for nourishing their leadership skills.

In Arthashastra some bitter truth are which are as follow.

(1) if a leader is too honest then he will be screwed first, just as straight trees are cut first. So too much honesty can turn out to be dangerous.

(2) A leader must at least pretend to be dangerous or scary or he may be taken for granted. Just like a non-poisonous snake, at least pretend to be venomous.

(3) A leader should never share his secrets with anybody or else he may be blackmailed sooner or later.

(4) A leader should always be aware that any friend could betray.

(5) A leader before starting his work should always seek answers to three basic questions

  1. Why am I doing this?
  2. What would be the repercussions?
  3. Will I be successful in my task?

Only after getting satisfactory replies to these three questions, one should go ahead.

(6) A leader should face fear fearlessly.

(7) A leader should not abandon his task midway due to fear of failure.

(8) A leader should remember that greatness is achieved not because of birth but because of deeds.

(9) A leader should take care when he makes friends, they should be at par. Neither above or below one's status

Behaviors Tips in Arthashtra:

(1) Never make incredible or false statements.

(2) Never interrupt the king (leader) when he is speaking

 (3) Mind the body language by avoiding loud laughter, brow-beating, buffoonery, etc.

(4) Avoid asking for promotions or personal benefits in public

Conclusion:

The ancient wisdom of Chanakya is every bit relevant today as it was hundreds of years ago. We try and emulate the leading business leaders of the world today. However, the principles that we learn at leading Business Schools today were already being taught by the great Chanakya. He transformed Chandragupta from a common man to Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, who ruled over the entire India.

How to Deal With Highly Talented People with Bad Attitude.?

In every organization, one of the biggest problem for every manager is to manage & deal with talented people who have a bad attitude.

In simple way if an employee is a poor performer you can fire them. But what about an employee is contributing positively but does not respect their colleagues, Insulting remarks to their colleagues, Arrives late & left early from the meetings, Unreachable during office hours, Not respecting the reporting managers, Seldom reply on calls & emails etc..

It's very hard to work deal with such kinds of bad attitude & such employees are tagged as "TALENTED TERRORS".

The present scenario of every organisation is TRADE-OFF the BAD ATTITUDE of a key performer or contributor towards the organization's goals. LeadershipIQ did one survey in that they found that,

  1. 87% of employees said that they are changing their job due to a bad attitude of their respective colleagues or bosses.
  2. 93% of employees said that they are less productive when they are working with people who have a bad attitude
  3. 89% of new hires failed in their job within 18months, due to behavioural issues, not skills.
Bad behaviour & attitude problem if not addressed immediately, it will hard to address once it becomes bigger & gets out of the hands.

Here is a framework,

How Incompetent Person Become a Leader.?

"Problems Always Appear Big When Incompetent Person Working on Them."

WILLIAM FATHER

Have you ever work with people who are not as good as their position in the organization..?

If yes...One questions definitely arise in your mind that is, how this incompetent person become a leader of my team/project/operations.

This scenario is common for every workplace. Because they are thinking that, I am better than others. But the reality is, they ain't.

When an incompetent person become a leader, whether in business, politics, education, operation, projects, the pillion members always feel an unfavourable attitude, low level of trust, high level of burnout, less engagement, and less productivity.

Eraldo Banovac said,

"An Incompetent Person in a Responsible Position May Cause Huge Damage. Such a Person Should Act Less and Think More."

When you search on google/being/yahoo my boss or my manager you will get toxic, abusive, and bossy relative articles.

So Here are Some Common Reasons How Incompetent Person Become a Leaders

1) Try to Showcase High Level of Confidence

This is a normal tendency across all the countries & cultures i.e those who have the confidence that a person always is the leader. The ability, talent, and competence evaluation happen in a later stage.

Such leaders have less knowledge but try to showcase more. These people are doing something but with a great amount of confidence they portray something which they want to portray.

2) Try to Showcase having  Charming, Entertaining & Jolly Attitude.

If the leader is charming, entertaining, humble that is good. Often people would like to work under such kind of leadership.  But a leader must be assertive nature to lead the team and hold disciplinary control over the team.

There is a huge difference between an effective leader and a comedian leader. When stress, work pressure, deadlines, etc such situations always demand an effective leadership style, not a comedian leadership.

3) Try to Showcase I am More Smarter than Him/Her (Narcissism mindset).

Narcissism mindset means a person who thinks only about themselves. Love themselves no cares, feeling about others. For some work, if they get appreciation means they think they are great in all the work.

They never think about their limitations, people who work under them, people's feedback, and suggestions.

Narcissism mindset leaders need only sympathy, love, and positive; yes sir, you are great, I agreed with you such kind of words they like.

These are some common facts about how incompetent a person becomes a leader by showcasing good knowledge with a positive attitude with a great personality.

Actually, they ain't.

But, disagree with someone more powerful than us like a boss or manager etc.things become very difficult and inducing situations occur for us. Because negative thoughts, fired from a job, etc tentative thoughts rolling inside our brain.

In one of my corporate training, for getting a 70% chance that creates an excellent career opportunity for us. Often people opt-out from disagreement and do as per boss/manager wishes. Because disagreement with a powerful personality requires lots of mental fitness, control over the words, and mainly gurts to showcase and express the views.

In life, we earn something and lose something. When we earn something which we like most, at that time we are very much happy and we share the happiness with our loved ones. Meanwhile, they also join our movement. But when we lose something which we like utmost or lose someone we truly love and break our own's heart or struggle with situations etc. In such situations, we always lose our calm and passion residing inside us. At such times, very few people or no one comes to join and accompany with our pain. Because these situations are always related with 5 kinds of grief. That are,

  1. Anger
  2. Bargaining
  3. Denial
  4. Depression
  5. Acceptances.

Due to this grief, we suffer from mental illness, dementia, and physical impairment.

Such kind of overwhelmed situations are always putting ourselves down. It tests our bold mindset, passions, and mainly tough resilient skills on our self.

Walt Disney, Stephen King, Bill Gates, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, Michael Jordan, Elon Mask etc. These legendry guys failed many times and lost so many things in their life but they never gave up. Because of their strong resilient skills which made them unstoppable.

Here are the 3 basic strategies Which Make You Resilient The person for becoming  Highly Successful After Hard Failure

1)    Remember: Everything Happens for a Reasons, Love It, Accept It and Learn from It.

Resilient people never think about bad situations. Because they know that suffering is a part of life. It does not mean that they always welcome situations. They know tough times come and it will go. They will suffer but amid that, they never discriminate about situations. They never say to god why me but say why not me. Because tough situations make them more successful than normal situations. That is the reason when a tough time comes always enjoy it, accept it, and learn from it. Because in that short period you learn so many things which make you different from others.

2)    Know Where to Give Attention

As human beings, we always stick to the negative part of life. Stick like a velcro. But resilient person never sticks with negativity. Always work on the situations and give attention to turn them into his/her favor. A resilient person always does analyses about the situation from more than 10 different dimensions. Decide whether it requires careful attention or not. By giving attention, if they can’t get the results or change the situations it means, its a waste of time. The alternative is to accept the situations and move on to other goals. It’s a vital and adorable skill if you want to be resilient.

3)    Self-talk.

Resilient people always think before any action. They ask these 3 questions before any conclusion

1)    What I am Doing.?

2)    Way of thinking is correct/ Incorrect.?

3)    Way of actions are helping/harming.?

This question takes him/her back to their driver seat of their life cycle.

Conclusion:

Life Doesn't Get Easier or More Forgiving, We Get Stronger & More Resilient

Steve Maraboli

To become resilient is not an attribute or skill. It’s all about thinking. It’s an ordinary process. Just willingness to go with that process.

3 Fundamental Reasons: Why We Hide the Truth or Prefer Half Truth.?

Image Credit Goes to Rights of their Owner

Image Credit Goes to Rights of their Owner

Since childhood, our parents, teachers and mentors taught us that “Always tell the truth, no matter how much bitter it might be”. It is because during childhood we could not understand the difference between right and wrong.

As we grew up and by experiencing, we all commonly found that telling truth is not always beneficial. We cannot get away when a difficult situation comes. Saying truth is not that much a big problem. Actually, the problem is saying little white truth or absence of key factors that are more poisonous than above. This fact we already know. Due to situational triggers, when and how factors force us to hide the truth. Due to this kind of shade of grey miscommunication, breakups and dysfunctional behaviour happen.

Here are 3 basic fundamental concerns why people hide the truth or say half-truth.

1)      To Protect self.

It’s a genuine thing that no one cannot be fully honest all the time. Because we will first take care of ourselves and then we will save others. It’s not selfish behaviour but it’s about caring for ourself, lives and career. As we all do mistakes and mischief. With the help of lying if we get out from that and saving our self-it’s good thing in this Iron Age. Because in such kind of situations speaking right, it's not a big challenge. But how the audience handles that truth or after saying truth he/she can handle the audience is the big challenge. So that is why people hide the truth or say half-truth. This is called as tactical speaking skills.

A person should not be too honest. Straight trees are cut first and honest people might get screwed first.

Chanakya

2)      Self-Image

It is a factor of perception. It's like how other people see you and feel about you. Those who have a good self-image in the market, those people are considered successful. To live happily in this world, self-image is very important.  To make a good image/ brand value in society, it requires concrete stand towards own principles & ethics, dedication and commitment towards committed words and clarity about the relationship. But in this iron age, it’s very difficult to manage all. So that is why people around us give importance to lying and believe in their own lie as strongly as they can.

3)      Success

To achieve success people can do anything. It’s a genuine thing. Because no one wants to see the face of failure. In this competitive world at every step, a competitor can knock you down at any time and any cost. To protect and save success, lying is part of that. Otherwise, someone will come and grab your opportunity from your hand. That’s why people take the support of false or prefer half-truth if there are prospects that she/he is getting big success after saying some few lying words.

2 Ways: How to Protect Your Goal from People's Criticism.

We know that, if we want to achieve something, we have to work hard. But people's criticism, what people will say, public disapproval and fear of other people, etc., such kinds of worries drag us down from our goal. Often it happens that we feel scared, tense and anxious during raising a hand in between the meeting, walking through strangers and during public speaking.

Because in today's time, other opinions, respect, and beliefs seem to be much more valuable than our self-respect and self-belief. When we get negative opinions from society, community and outliners at that time, it is a very embarrassing moment for us. Eventually, we take their opinions seriously and this way we are harming our skills, potential, and abilities because of invaluable opinions.
 Then,

How to conquer the desired goal without worrying about criticisms of other people.?

1) Know Your Self

When people embarrass you as well as your abilities and skills that time you must decide whether they are right or wrong. Next, How you can decide this..?
You can decide this by knowing your self deeply. Since birth, no one is perfect. You have to spend some time on yourself so that you interact with your soul (By only meditating) and discuss inwardly what are your abilities, skills, strengths, and weaknesses. This thing no one can say perfectly better than you. According to that results, you decide whether haters or shouter are right or wrong.

2) Develop Your Own Philosophy

It is all about your beliefs and personal values. Before moving in forwarding direction ask one question to your self. Whatever I am doing, is it correct..?? is it good for humanity.? (Likewise, ask questions related to nation, society, family, and friend). After giving the right answer, now craft your personal philosophy. This philosophy will protect you from other people's criticisms.
Personal philosophy example,
 I can I will win.
Never give up.
Yes, don't sit back, step back and bounce back.
Karma is bigger than destiny.
Hard work always pays off.
No matter. I will push myself till my breaking point.

Likewise, develop your own philosophy and commit to it until you reach your desired goal. Speak loudly inwardly or in publically when someone provokes you and your abilities. This is the way you can protect yourself from criticisms, negative feedback, and sledging.

3 Factors Can't Judge Trustworthiness

In today's date presentation, advertisements, fluent communication skills etc are the ways of creating trust in someone's mind. In that, your values, ethics, locality, honesty and power etc are additional spices which help you to create trust. Now when your resources and money are on the line, then how can you gauge the trustworthiness of someone so that the person will give you maximum benefits by optimum and fair usage of resources and money.? Because on the internet many guidelines, facts are available which are somehow correct but if you are going to implement in practical life it will give you the flawed result. The reason is Human Behaviour. It is Complex Thing & It can be Assessed by Own Intuition.

Here are 3 Factors that Can't Decide Person Trustworthiness.

1) Integrity

Nowadays the reputation is a proxy of integrity. Based on the market reputation we are judging a person is reliable or not. Belief, integrity is not a stable trait. Nowadays in this world, no one is taking anyone's responsibility of anyone who gives any proof, certification and evidence related to integrity and honestly of a person. Anyone can be betrayed by anyone at any time. This thing we already know but we ignore. Eventually, we make a deal by putting blind trust and face a future problem like dishonesty or cheating.

2) Power

Power in terms of social and economical. This is a major factor which is nowadays above integrity and honesty. We always try to check the socio-economical status of people and try to judge the person's trustworthiness. But we know that as power and status increase the ethical values like honesty, integrity and reliability decreases.  This thing we already know but we ignore. Eventually, we make a deal by putting blind trust and face a future problem like dishonesty or cheating.

3) Confidence

Those who are very good in soft skills and have enough knowledge of body language and human behaviours will always express themselves by showcasing pride. Confidence is not a good indicator of trustworthiness and can't give a solid prediction about trustworthiness. Because people can easily portray fake confidence and such kinds always fail to commit their responsibilities.

Person's trustworthiness depends on the power of relative feelings, susceptibility and longterm goals

What is Mindfulness & How to Have a Mindful Conversation??

Mindfulness Is Not Difficult, Just We Need to Remember to Do It.
Sharon Salzberg
Mindfulness means to live and feel each and every moment of your present with full focus and awareness. It's all about noticing things in a non-habitual and nonjudgmental manner. This will improve your awareness and help you to take better options, decisions and actions.

Phycological science says that mindfulness is very good for us. Mostly it will give us better clarity of our surrounding environment.
Here are my ways of mindfulness.
  • When I visit any new place, first of all, I take a relax glance at my surroundings for something new.
  • I notice the deep, my colleague behaviour, a tone of his voice and body language. Figure out something new in him/her or notice something different that I never noticed before in anyone. etc
  • During my conversation, I just stay calm and try to seek something new and ignore the information that I already know.
  • I used to do this when I have free time. I make the cheats of my friends names and shuffle it. I open one by one and realise what is my first thought comes in my mind for them.
This my way of mindfulness. Which increases my awareness and focusing power. Also, help me in one to one conversation with my colleagues.
Then,

How Mindfulness is Very Effective During Conversation.?

In the office or in routine, when we converse with someone, that time we listen carefully and then give active and rapid responses. It happens with all of them after some time unconsciously we repeat the same thing in mind and start inward conversation. Thoroughly we analyse the responses we made or s/he made, behaviour, any statistical data s/he presented, arrogant successive responses etc

illustrations ( inwardly talk with our self or with mind likewise)
  • I think his behaviour was totally changed from last week..!!
  • Finally, he passed to change my mind, last week he tried a lot but he failed.
  • His response was too successive.
Like that. But in this, we never try to seek new information which we don't know or what we should know. Such kind of conversation called gossip. Unproductive, directionless and meaningless conversation with each other. It has no objective and final conclusion. A conversation with focus and awareness called a mindful conversation. In this, we try to seek new information without giving the least responses.

In mindful conversation, good eye contact indicates our focus in conversation. Noticing the Body movements, behaviour, hand gestures and tone the voice, it indicates that we are aware of the person and our surrounding environment. From this, we can anticipate the other person perceptions easily with least responses. Also, this will help us in responding effectively during a conversation. It will definitely improve your personal, professional and social life.
Conclusion of all is,
Mindfulness is all about how you feel each of your moment. For this which I feel that you don't need any deep meditation and yoga techniques. Just you need to keep yourself calm, relax and with full awareness and focus you need to scan your environment.

5 points to Remember Before Meeting with CXO level professionals.

When you are scheduled with the executive meeting, at that time one thought always comes in your mind i.e How will I get the attention of them?, How will I impress them.?, questions always come in your mind and give a feeling of anxiety the night before the meeting. Because as we all know the first impression is the last and that is why it's very critical and crucial and you don't want to spoil it. So, here are the

5 tips you should keep in mind before meeting with top executives.

1) Observe the Style

When you meet with any executive, first, start with a nice handshake and pleasant talk. From this, you get an idea, whether he likes a short conversation or along one. Does he like statistical data or a hypothetical conversation?. By this way, you can adjust your style of talking, presentation, thoughts and ideas according to their mindsets.

Never start your talk with your main presentation, asking question and answer. First, let them speak then you speak. First look, analyse and then present.

2)How to Start conversation

After a good handshake, you start a conversation with a very short introduction Example

"Good morning sir, I am Johan, newly recruited as an engineer."
"Hello sir, I am Rockey, from the engineering department."
Now you further drive this start with the team introduction, team credentials, team innovation and team initiatives.

3) Give Opportunities to Companion

Keep remembering that it is meeting not an interview or one on one talk. In the meeting,  make your point when you get your turn but never try to snatch your companion's opportunities.

If you are a team leader give chance to your team members to speak. If you won't give, the executive might feel you are doing dictating in the team and you absolutely don't know the meaning of team and team effort.

4) Collaborative

Collaborative mindset always gives success rather than a solitary mindset. In the meeting, if you find your companion idea is noteworthy, do a collaboration and present it together. So it will indicate that you are a real team leader who appreciates their values.  Executive like such kind of mindset because it is very beneficial from an organisation perspective.

5) Be honest

No explanation needed. Because honesty is not a skill, it is a practise you are following every single day in your routine work. This practises you can not hide or pretend for a long time. Because executive people have very good experience in judging the behaviour of the people. So they will easily catch you if you pretend or show that you are honest in work.

conclusion
There will always be a reason why you meet people,
Either you need to change your life
or
You are the one that will change theirs.

Why Brainstorming is More Productive then Meetings.?

To solve any problem, first, we conduct a meeting or brainstorming session with another concerned person. These are the two process which will help us to solve the problem and refresh our existing stored memory.
Lets first understand,

what is the difference between brainstorming and Meeting.
Brainstorming is a process in which, people gather together who already know the problem thoroughly and each of the chair members prepares their own solution. Finally, by brainstorming they design a new solution by hearing all the solution which resolve all the fine concerns of the problem.
Whereas,
The meeting is also a process in which people gather together and share the information and try to enrich the existing solution.
Both techniques help us to solve the problem. But one factor that creates a major difference i.e problem understanding. In both the techniques we sit for preparation before gathering. But, when we prepare for the brainstorming process, at that time we have a very fair idea about the problem and then we try to generate a solution for the problem. Whereas in a meeting, we just try to enrich the existing solution without considering other solutions, modification and judgements. Hence in meetings, we could not find an exact solution to the problem or if the solution comes that will not be up to the mark which tackles all minor concern of the problem. So,

Why brainstorming is much more effective than general meetings?

Because this process follows the basic five steps of problem-solving.
1) Thoroughly it defines the problem.
2) Generate an ample amount of solutions.
3) Evaluate solutions based on a fixed parameter related to the problem.
4) Pickup solution by considering, judging and analysing other solutions.
5) Insist us to make an execution plan.

In one line we can say,
A better question leads you a better answer.
Because when we are placing our attention on the problem, automatically our brain solves the problem. In the brainstorming process, each member tries to solve the problem intuitively which is remarkably more efficient than professional or casual meetings.
In meetings, attendee never tries to follow problem-solving stages. They start conquering problem by improving the existing solution. Brainstorming process sounds good because of attendee conquering problem stagewise

Conclusion
If you define the problem correctly, you almost have the solution

Why it's so Hard to Follow Your Passion.?

"If you can't figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. Passion will lead you towards the right purpose."

BISHOP. T.D. JACKS.

Many times your parents, mentors, teachers and well-wishers always say that "Always follow your passion rather than others opinions." Deloitte did one survey entitled as work-passion survey According to that survey only 20% of people in the US follow their passion.  Also, they said that those who are not believing in passion, they are less interested to explore the new era of the world. For them, it's very difficult to pursue new things in their life. But in trying new things, people forget what is passion and how to pursue it.

Here are,

3 main reasons Why People  Fail to Pursue Their Passion.

1) Stop Discovering New Things, First Do Assigned Work.

One misinterpretation is that passion is not an innate ability. Passion comes from discovering your ability. By doing hard work, by completing the assigned job only you can identify your ability and skills. But, by discovering new things, changing job,  work won't help you in identifying passion. Because passion is also switched by changing a job or work. Fact about discovering passion is, to do work or complete a job with full attention, skills and a high amount of confidence. So that your assumptions, knowledge will be challenged by obstacles. By facing and solving obstacles you can only find your ability and then passion.

2) Passion is about care and not for Joy.

Passion means joy and fun about work. This is one common believe most of us have in mind. But passion is not about what you love, it's about what you care. Focusing on what you love that gives you happiness and joy but, focusing on what you care that gives you a feeling of passion as well as give feeling to do something unique in that job.

3) It's About to Hardship

Following passion means sticking with your goals, facing adversity and becoming the best performers. Believe in your hardship, keep going and try to face as much as adversity as you can. Those who are following passion only for the joy they are less likely to succeed after some months down the line.

Conclusion

Finding a passion is not an easy task. People take years of years to find out. Some may find out easily or some may not find till die. So my opinion is to do work, face obstacles and live life with brave heart and dignity.

"Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice above all, don't let anyone limit your dreams."
