How to do Cross Culture Negotiations

Before any professional international or domestic negotiations, we always do some strategic planning or homework about tomorrow’s face off. While planning we always do some research & think about some factors like time, setting arrangements, situation, stakes of opposite parties, history of the parties, individual preferences, mood and nations of all the chaired persons.

In an unidentified article, a Japanese journalist describes that “U.S negotiators are stubborn to agree”.

In this section, I’ve comprehended top countries negotiation approaches in terms of behaviour pattern, tactical style and cultural perspective.

These could help negotiators and mediators prepare negotiations strategy for possible pitfalls to occur due to cross-cultural factors.

Kindly Note: Below approaches are only guidelines. It won't apply in every circumstance of negotiations.

The U.S. Approaches Negotiation

  • U.S. negotiators are autonomous, independent, self-reliant and tend to think individually. They love to work singly rather than as a segment of a crew. They focus on one problem at a time
  • U.S negotiators have a very much competitive approach in negotiations. If negotiation goes in a fall-back position then, negotiators come up with unrealistic offers and try to make a win-win situation.
  • U.S negotiators are very much energetic, confident, and enjoy debating their positions.

African Approaches to Negotiation

African follow ancestors formal laws, regulations & give more emphasis on hierarchies. While cross-cultural negotiation both parties admire the laws & regulations made by their ancestors. The aim of  this is to get a positive outcome without any distress or hurt

Japanese Styles of Negotiation

Japanese negotiators are focus, interdependent and have a hierarchical orientation.

Japanese negotiators are known for their courtesy and try to establish connections before the negotiation begins. Japanese negotiators tend to put less emphasis on the literal meanings of words used in negotiation.

European Styles of Negotiation

European styles of negotiation vary according to territory, community, language is spoken and many other contextual factors.

One group study found the French negotiators are very aggressive to achieve their goals. German and British negotiators were evaluated as moderately aggressive in the same study.

Latin American Styles of Negotiation

Latin American negotiators believe in systematic works & believe in associations.

In Central America, people respond to conflict very holistically rather than a linear, analytical one.

When Central American negotiators needed help while negotiations, they tend to look inside partials rather than outsider neutrals,

They referred to the concept of confianza. Confianza means "trustworthiness," that "they know us" and "we know them" and they will "keep our confidences."

The Evolution of Negotiation

The above approaches of negotiation across national cultures are changing constantly. International business culture tends to privilege Western approaches to negotiation, centred on problem-solving and linear communication, as do many settings. As Western norms are balanced with Eastern and Southern values, and local traditions are balanced with regional and national approaches, negotiation practices continue their global evolution.

Effective Communication in a Work Place.

As per the study done by Mckinsey & Company in 2019, recorded that 61% fortune 500 company’s project manager unable to take a decision on time due to lack of internal coordination & miscommunication. Almost 500000 hours spend improving communication between internal departments, team member as well as organizational level. If we convert this precious hour in cost i.e the net worth will be approx. $250million.

Lack of team coordination, lack of communication between team members as well as at the organizational level, Lack of team collaboration leads to uneven quality decisions about execution of strategy. This very much discouraging & annoying for the project manager but very much costly for an organization perspective.

Here are 4c’s that will help managers to improve communication & internal coordination at the team level as well as organizational level.

These 4c’s not only improve manager’s decision skills but also organization can get even marginally better & more efficient about decision making, it will save a lot of time & money, improve morale and lead to superior business outcomes.

Four types of “C” for the Effective Communication at Team as well as Organizational Level.

Call it —The project manager calls the team members together for discussion/ debate on proposals and recommendations.

Close it—When all the angles of possibilities are evaluated, multiple perspectives explored, and trade-offs clarified than project manager makes the decision.

Commit to it—Once the decision is made, all the team members make a commitment towards the decision and its implementation.

Communicate it—Share the decision or reasoning throughout the team & organizational level to ensuring that the message is clear and consistent and cascades throughout the appropriate levels of the organization.

Conclusion;

Following these steps will help bring clarity and coherence to decision making process ” for the effective communication at the team as well as organizational level.

But what about an employee is contributing positively but does not respect their colleagues, Insulting remarks to their colleagues, Arrives late & left early from the meetings, Unreachable during office hours, Not respecting the reporting managers, Seldom reply on calls & emails etc..

It's very hard to work deal with such kinds of bad attitude & such employees are tagged as "TALENTED TERRORS".

The present scenario of every organisation is TRADE-OFF the BAD ATTITUDE of a key performer or contributor towards the organization's goals. LeadershipIQ did one survey in that they found that,

  1. 87% of employees said that they are changing their job due to a bad attitude of their respective colleagues or bosses.

If you are a business or a professional person and doing a job with information, data's & dealing with multiple numbers thus required a special kind of thinking ability i.e critical thinking.

Actually, critical thinking doesn't mean take a correct decision under pressure or stressful situations. Critical thinking is totally different. In this, you are dealing with biases/ unbiases information and filtering out unwanted data's. By doing such kind of permutations & combinations you are analysing the information and relative situation from different angles.

In this world, no one can teach you how to think critically or how to make a decision in odd times. Only some practises are available that you need to apply in your routine life until your muscle gets develop to handle the worst situations.

Here are a few exercises that you must follow in your routine life to be a better critical thinker.

1) Express All Your Thoughts on Paper

When you are analysing the critical information/ data's that time you are overwhelmed with different distinctions. Like stress, anxiety, the pressure of failure, etc thoughts creates confusion with the decisions.

So the best way is to note down your ideas, thoughts/ interpretations on paper with diagrams, charts, or pros vs cons. Then try to express your interpretations in different ways. Like read your writing slowly, loudly, or read it with a different pause.

Due to this, you can easily evaluate your judgments, interpretations better than ordinary processes like thinking continuously without doing nothing.

2) Share Your Strategy with Others.

Sometimes, you have a plan but unable to express it. It means you don't have proper insights about your idea.

When you share your interpretations/Ideas/Thoughts with others/team members that time you can get actual insights of your interpretations/ideas/thoughts which you need to think again.

Share your thoughts with team members for better results.

3) Think Backward

For any solutions, you must have a better insight about your problem.

For a better understanding of the problem always looks at the problem from backward. It means to go through the situation where it was ended and move towards the start. Then you will get perfect insights about your problem.

4)Set Your Daily Routine

The above exercises only works when you have proper knowledge of your domain. For improvement, you need to do,

  • Expose yourself with the latest topics, content, and news about your domain.
  • Do experiment or research with your work.
  • Sourcing yourself with smart people.
  • Take feedback from every person

Above steps which not only improve your critical thinking ability but also give you better insights into your problem.

Critical thinking is not a task. It's all about gathering data, analysing the data, and come out with a unique solution. By researching, analysing might you not be a success or correct answer but you will be closer to success.

Decide whether it requires careful attention or not. By giving attention, if they can’t get the results or change the situations it means, its a waste of time. The alternative is to accept the situations and move on to other goals. It’s a vital and adorable skill if you want to be resilient.

3)    Self-talk.

Resilient people always think before any action. They ask these 3 questions before any conclusion

1)    What I am Doing.?

2)    Way of thinking is correct/ Incorrect.?

3)    Way of actions are helping/harming.?

This question takes him/her back to their driver seat of their life cycle.

3 Fundamental Reasons: Why We Hide the Truth or Prefer Half Truth.?

Image Credit Goes to Rights of their Owner

Image Credit Goes to Rights of their Owner

Since childhood, our parents, teachers and mentors taught us that “Always tell the truth, no matter how much bitter it might be”. It is because during childhood we could not understand the difference between right and wrong.

As we grew up and by experiencing, we all commonly found that telling truth is not always beneficial. We cannot get away when a difficult situation comes. Saying truth is not that much a big problem. Actually, the problem is saying little white truth or absence of key factors that are more poisonous than above. This fact we already know. Due to situational triggers, when and how factors force us to hide the truth. Due to this kind of shade of grey miscommunication, breakups and dysfunctional behaviour happen.

Here are 3 basic fundamental concerns why people hide the truth or say half-truth.

1)      To Protect self.

It’s a genuine thing that no one cannot be fully honest all the time. Because we will first take care of ourselves and then we will save others. It’s not selfish behaviour but it’s about caring for ourself, lives and career. As we all do mistakes and mischief. With the help of lying if we get out from that and saving our self-it’s good thing in this Iron Age. Because in such kind of situations speaking right, it's not a big challenge. But how the audience handles that truth or after saying truth he/she can handle the audience is the big challenge. So that is why people hide the truth or say half-truth. This is called as tactical speaking skills.

A person should not be too honest. Straight trees are cut first and honest people might get screwed first.

Chanakya

2)      Self-Image

It is a factor of perception. It's like how other people see you and feel about you. Those who have a good self-image in the market, those people are considered successful. To live happily in this world, self-image is very important.  To make a good image/ brand value in society, it requires concrete stand towards own principles & ethics, dedication and commitment towards committed words and clarity about the relationship. But in this iron age, it’s very difficult to manage all. So that is why people around us give importance to lying and believe in their own lie as strongly as they can.

3)      Success

To achieve success people can do anything. It’s a genuine thing. Because no one wants to see the face of failure. In this competitive world at every step, a competitor can knock you down at any time and any cost. To protect and save success, lying is part of that. Otherwise, someone will come and grab your opportunity from your hand. That’s why people take the support of false or prefer half-truth if there are prospects that she/he is getting big success after saying some few lying words.

Keep this thing in your mind

Earth is Round not only Geographically but also emotionally.

You’ll get that when the behaviour you do to others comes back to you anyhow.

2) 3 Steps: How to Break Your Bad Habits.?

3 Steps: How to Break Your Bad Habits.?

Let's first understand,
what is the Habit?
Habit is a part of our behaviour, which gives pleasure to our mind, emotions and body.
Ex. biting nails, watching porn, Having dinner in front of the TV, Alcohol, cigarettes etc.
These are the activities which we like to do most of the time when we feel stress, bored, frightened, sad and angry. By following such kind of activity, our arterioles become fully numb and, we get an inner peace with this habit. but,
once you start following such kind of activities every day and feel ultimate pleasure from it, then automatically it goes into auto-pilot mode afterwards it turns into habits. Once activity transforms into habits, afterwards it's very difficult to breakdown.

Zig Zigla
 so,

Follow these 3 steps and get rid of bad habits.

1)  Strong Emotional Competence.

You must be emotionally competent to start breaking your habits. Simply pushing and forcing your self will not give you lasting success and might also create uncomfortable behaviour throughout your way.
Throughout this practice (breaking habit), your emotions must be calm and motivated. Your breath must be relaxed and deep so that your mind will help you to resist your self from bad habits. Your emotions handle your mind and heart. In this period try to keep yourself positive. Because positive vibes mean positive emotions.  Positive emotion means solitary mind and heart feels free to tackle any situation If someone follows the mind, he/she can easily break their habit but those who follow the voice of the heart, for them it's very difficult because our emotions are strongly attached to our heart.

2) Design Your Cognitive skill

This is the most effective way to break your bad habits. Always try to develop own philosophy and definition. Because when you prepare your cognitive skill, that time you consider all your pros and cons. So that it will be easy for you to stick with your perception.
Ex. I always run the TV and Mobile while eating. As such, I can't concentrate on my eating and I do not masticate properly during eating. My parents always scold me about this bad habit. Afterwards, I decided  to get rid of this bad habit
So my philosophy was:-
I will have my breakfast next to the window, lunch in galleries and dinner on the terrace. Because of this, I started enjoying my food very nicely.
By this way, you can develop your own philosophy and definition to break your bad habits.

3) Asked 3 Questions Before Following Any Activity

Analyze your each and every activity, ask three questions inwardly to your self before following,
1) Why I am doing this.?
2) Is this activity harming me.?
3) What will I get from this.?
Inwardly give an honest answer to yourself, and if you are satisfied with the answer then you can follow your activity.

It takes around 30sec to 40sec to decide whether you need to follow the activity or not.

2 Ways: How to Protect Your Goal from People's Criticism.

We know that, if we want to achieve something, we have to work hard. But people's criticism, what people will say, public disapproval and fear of other people, etc., such kinds of worries drag us down from our goal. Often it happens that we feel scared, tense and anxious during raising a hand in between the meeting, walking through strangers and during public speaking.

Because in today's time, other opinions, respect, and beliefs seem to be much more valuable than our self-respect and self-belief. When we get negative opinions from society, community and outliners at that time, it is a very embarrassing moment for us. Eventually, we take their opinions seriously and this way we are harming our skills, potential, and abilities because of invaluable opinions.
 Then,

How to conquer the desired goal without worrying about criticisms of other people.?

1) Know Your Self

When people embarrass you as well as your abilities and skills that time you must decide whether they are right or wrong. Next, How you can decide this..?
You can decide this by knowing your self deeply. Since birth, no one is perfect. You have to spend some time on yourself so that you interact with your soul (By only meditating) and discuss inwardly what are your abilities, skills, strengths, and weaknesses. This thing no one can say perfectly better than you. According to that results, you decide whether haters or shouter are right or wrong.

2) Develop Your Own Philosophy

It is all about your beliefs and personal values. Before moving in forwarding direction ask one question to your self. Whatever I am doing, is it correct..?? is it good for humanity.? (Likewise, ask questions related to nation, society, family, and friend). After giving the right answer, now craft your personal philosophy. This philosophy will protect you from other people's criticisms.
Personal philosophy example,
 I can I will win.
Never give up.
Yes, don't sit back, step back and bounce back.
Karma is bigger than destiny.
Hard work always pays off.
No matter. I will push myself till my breaking point.

Likewise, develop your own philosophy and commit to it until you reach your desired goal. Speak loudly inwardly or in publically when someone provokes you and your abilities. This is the way you can protect yourself from criticisms, negative feedback, and sledging.
