In every organization, one of the biggest problem for every manager is to manage & deal with talented people who have a bad attitude.
In simple way if an employee is a poor performer you can fire them. But what about an employee is contributing positively but does not respect their colleagues, Insulting remarks to their colleagues, Arrives late & left early from the meetings, Unreachable during office hours, Not respecting the reporting managers, Seldom reply on calls & emails etc..
It's very hard to work deal with such kinds of bad attitude & such employees are tagged as "TALENTED TERRORS".
The present scenario of every organisation is TRADE-OFF the BAD ATTITUDE of a key performer or contributor towards the organization's goals. LeadershipIQ did one survey in that they found that,
- 87% of employees said that they are changing their job due to a bad attitude of their respective colleagues or bosses.
- 93% of employees said that they are less productive when they are working with people who have a bad attitude
- 89% of new hires failed in their job within 18months, due to behavioural issues, not skills.
Bad behaviour & attitude problem if not addressed immediately, it will hard to address once it becomes bigger & gets out of the hands.
Here is a framework,
How to Deal With Bad Attitude Effectively in 4 Easy Steps.
- Establish Upfront Conversation.
- Describe an issue specifically with time & objective.
- Eliminate Bed Rapo
- Offer choices.
Let Understand with Boss & Employee Conversation.
Boss: Rohit & Employee: Arun
Arun: Hi sir, Did you called me..??
Rohit: Yes, Please seat. I want to have an important conversation with you.
Arun: What..?
(Rohit tried to established UPfront Conversation with Arun)
Rohit: In the last internal meeting you made three rude personal insults with your colleagues. They were seeking your opinions because you are a senior experienced person and you just insulted them badly in front of all.
(Rohit describe the issue specifically with time & objective with Arun)
Arun: Sir, they don't know anything about their works & responsibilities. I showcase their stands in front of all. On that, I have no regrets.
Rohit: This is not acceptable if you are working with this attitude & behaviour. I won't allow you next time to seat in the meetings.
(Rohit Strictly Eliminate Bed Repo from Arun)
Arun: I'll try to change.
Rohit: I am not forcing you to change. It's your choice to change or not to change.
Arun: I'll try...
Rohit: If you change, you will be much more effective & I think you'll see your colleagues respond more positively. If not I'll take formal disciplinary actions, which could be termination.
Arun: Sure sir, Next time I'll not disappoint you.
(Rohit Putting Choices in front of Arun)
This is the framework which you should follow for talented terrors.
If you follow this framework most talented people with bad attitudes will realise you are serious, might they will be co-operative. Sometimes might you will see different reactions such as making excuses, becoming angry or even resort to dramatic reaction such as crying. Whatever is the negative reaction, all you to do is repeat the above 4 steps over and over again.
