In India total population is 1.366billion. Out of that approximately 0.2%, 2.7232millions belonging to the LGBTQ community. As we all are aware that LGBTQ communities are more likely to depressed, oppressed & discriminated community in India.

Depression & Anxiety
As we know depression is the most common mental health problem. A recent study showcased that 56 million Indians are suffering from depression & 38 million Indians are suffering from anxiety. In these numbers, 30% are belonging to the LGBTQ community.
These numbers are shooting up year by year due to discrimination & oppression of the LGBTQ community.
LGBTQ Youth in School & Colleges
Predominantly youth are experiencing enormous discrimination during school/ college hours. These students are most likely to miss their school due to experiencing discrimination from friends as well as teachers.
In India, no such study is carried out but we can take a glance from US study done Youth.gov
In that 8534 LGBTQ students were participated in the age group of 13 to 20 year old.
In that, they found that,
- One-third of the total LGBTQ youths population is absent on the first day of their college because of their sexual orientation.
- 82% students had been verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation.
- 38% physically harassed because of their sexual orientation.
- 18% physically assaulted because of their sexual orientation.
LGBTQ Youths at Home
LGBTQ youths are do not feel to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity to their parents. Due to fear of rejection, cut off contacts, physical abuse & homelessness.
Such incidents force them to depression, anxiety & suicide.
As per the US study, Youth.Gov, 40% of LGBTQ youths/heterosexual adults are sundowners by their parents due to disclosing of sexual orientation.
LGBTQ Adults
Adults who are part LGBTQ community are most likely to have a mental health problem due to social discrimination. Adults who are transgender are more likely to report as psychological distress.
As per the US study, Youth.Gov, 40% of LGBTQ adults/ heterosexual are tried to attempt or commit suicide at some point in their lives.
Conclusion:
People who are LGBTQ are more likely to face mental as well as physical illness due to discrimination, oppression & anxiety. These may cause them more likely to commit suicide. Youngsters are experiencing discrimination in social, public, home and other wider communities.
But,
We all are equal, no matter who they are & whom they love, we all are free.
